A general term for a montmorillonite clay, often added to a body to improve plasticity. Used in bodies (up to 5%) to increase plasticity, and in glazes (up to 2%) as a suspending agent, but must be added to the dry ingredients. At stoneware temperatures it fuses to produce a typical brown colour (5%).
Increases glaze viscosity, firing range and resistance to crystallization.
